Radio City
Music Hall in Rockefeller Center is the largest indoor theatre in the world and
has hosted stage shows, movies, and special events since it first opened in
1932. In that same year, the famous
high-kicking Rockettes came to Radio City, and they have performed their
Christmas Spectacular there ever since.
More than 1 million people attend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular
every year, making it America’s premier holiday production.
In 2012, on the occasion of their 85th
anniversary, the Rockettes literally took their Christmas show on the road,
and performed in Nashville, Chicago, Dallas, and St. Louis – among other
cities.
But not just anyone with a pair of sparkly shoes can be a Rockette. Even if you meet the age requirement (18 years
or older), the other eligibility criteria are pretty strict. All Rockettes need to be female and between
5’6” and 5’10” and a half (when barefoot).
They must be able to demonstrate high proficiency in both jazz and
tap. And while voice quality is not as
important as being able to sing and dance at the same time, a candidate
who can stand up straight and still
kick themselves in the forehead is probably a shoe-in. Um, pass.
